The ‘Great Expectations’ in Technology for 2017 and Beyond

2017 is hinting to great expectations in line with some groundbreaking research and innovations as regards technology. If the many inventions and trials in technology are anything to go by, this may be the year to watch. Only a few months old, so much has happened that many are left to wonder what else is in store. The advancement touches on many areas of technology both existing-to make them better- and conquering new frontiers.

There are a number of significant improvements to the already existing technology this year. One of the areas that have recorded some breakthrough though not yet operational is the Virtual and Augmented Reality technology. Virtual reality technology is responsible for the 2D and 3D viewership that usually require special glasses to enjoy. The picture quality of these 2D and 3D devices are crisp clear and out of this world. The production is done with two or more lenses simulating the way the human eyes are placed. They capture everything just the way we view things and then the material is ‘stitched’ together as synthesized by the goggles that one wears while watching them. This is why the 3D smart gadgets come with a set of special goggles to view them, as our eyes cannot synthesize the images. Google and other tech houses like Samsung and SONY improved on the technology further to bring the virtual reality goggles that one can use to transform even a smart phone into a 3D streaming device. These were initially for the video games but are now finding other applications. The VR and AR headsets turn a drone into an experience in photography and movie making. Google announced its plans to enable families and individuals to record their memories in 3D. This is after successfully creating some Virtual Reality movies.

However, if what some researchers at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and technology succeed in their plan to improve the visibility by producing a bigger 3D holographic image, then we may not need the special goggles to view the produced VR movies and media. This they do by diffusing and separating the light rays using a modulator that will make the images visible to the unaided human eyes soon. The only problem is the availability of Televisions or devices with enough power in terms of megapixels to make this viewership possible. However, it may be sooner than we think, as research is ongoing.

Another area that we expect more is with the Artificial Intelligence. Among the famous Digital or artificial intelligence assistants are Siri by Apple, Google Home by Google and Alexa by Amazon. These assistants can do virtually anything with smart devices connected to them. They can also give directions, answer questions and do almost anything humans can do as regards conversations and smart working. They adapt to the user’s likes and style so that they can give custom made answers or solutions to given problems.

These smart assistants use a myriad of search engines to get the information they use. They are always up to date and improve with any engagement with the users. The law firm Baker and Hostetler have made quite some breakthrough with this artificial intelligence: “Ross” is an AI lawyer they just hired to represent its clients. Just like other digital assistants, Ross uses a variety of search engines and resources to argue out the cases for the clients with proper quotations and citations as required by the law. These citations are then used to make the arguments and submissions for the clients and Ross is a perfect attorney by any other name. This is a breakthrough that would see more digital assistants getting to serve humanity in all convenience and perfection. This is what the year promises to bring and more.
